Measuring Groundwater Flow Velocities near Drinking Water Extraction Wells in Unconsolidated Sediments

چکیده

Groundwater is an important source of drinking water in coastal regions with predominantly unconsolidated sediments. To protect and manage extraction wells these regions, reliable estimates groundwater flow velocities around well fields are paramount importance. Such measurements help to identify the dynamics its response stresses, optimize resources management, calibrate models. In this article, we review approaches for measuring relatively high velocity near wells. We discuss their potential limitations use environment. Increased stray gas abundance in a subset of drinking water wells near Marcellus shale gas extraction.

Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are transforming energy production, but their potential environmental effects remain controversial. We analyzed 141 drinking water wells across the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province of northeastern Pennsylvania, examining natural gas concentrations and isotopic signatures with proximity to shale gas wells. Methane was detected in 82% of dri...

Vulnerability of shallow groundwater and drinking-water wells to nitrate in the United States.

Two nonlinear models were developed at the national scale to (1) predict contamination of shallow ground water (typically < 5 m deep) by nitrate from nonpoint sources and (2) to predict ambient nitrate concentration in deeper supplies used for drinking. The new models have several advantages over previous national-scale approaches. First, they predict nitrate concentration (rather than probabil...

Determination chlorine of groundwater with electrical conductivity by Geostatistical methods (Case study of drinking water wells Mashhad)

Information on chlorine concentration in groundwater for drinking and agriculture is important. If theconcentration of this element is in too much water can cause problems for humans and is toxic toplants. Measurement of chloride in groundwater is extensive, costly and time consuming. Find easyand inexpensive method has a special importance. the Statistical methods are based on spatialvariables...

Borehole Geophysical Logging in Unconsolidated Sediments

Over the last two decades, several advances have been made in the development and application of slim-hole geophysical sondes for use in groundwater, engineering, and environmental applications. This equipment is commonly used to provide qualitative (but detailed) estimates of grain size, sediment type, porosity, density, pore-water salinity, as well as bulk and shear moduli, to supplement geol...

Natural Radioactivity in Drinking Water of Drilled Wells in Zanjan, Northwestern Iran

Background: Many radioactive compounds may be released into the environment and hence into the drinking water supplies due to the human activities. Radionuclides can also enter the food chain if the contaminated water is used for drinking or irrigation purposes. Objective: To estimate the annual effective dose of natural radioactive materials like 226Ra and 40K in drinking water of wells in Zan...
